October is when our corner of Clackamas County, tucked right up against the Cascade foothills, really shows off. The bigleaf maples turn that brilliant gold, the mornings get that crisp snap, and Mount Hood starts wearing its first dusting of snow. It is also one of the busiest months on the community calendar, full of pumpkin patches, harvest gatherings, and traditions that families look forward to all year. Whether you are a longtime local or just starting to think about making Estacada or Sandy home, here is what is worth doing this October. For the full lineup, keep an eye on my community events calendar.
Estacada Oktoberfest: Saturday, September 26
Before the calendar even flips to October, there is one big date to circle: the Estacada Oktoberfest, Saturday, September 26, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM in downtown Estacada. Expect a costume contest, pumpkin painting, a pie-eating contest, polka music, and plenty of food and drink from local vendors. It is one of those genuinely family-friendly days where you will run into half the town, and kids especially love the pumpkin painting.
The same day is the final Estacada Farmers Market of the season, so you can shop the last harvest of summer in the morning and stay for the festival in the afternoon. That is a pretty perfect September Saturday in my book.
Pumpkin patches and fall farms in Boring
Just 15 or 20 minutes from both Estacada and Sandy, the farms along the Boring area become the region's pumpkin patch headquarters in October. Three family farms are the standouts, and they are each a little different:
Bushue's Family Farm opens its seasonal pumpkin patch in late September with hayrides, a corn trail, farm animals, and that famous pig-train ride the little ones adore. Entry is free and the fresh donuts are worth the trip alone. Liepold Family Farms has been running its fall festival for 27 years, with a large themed corn maze, scavenger hunt, pumpkin patch, hayrides, and a cider stand, running straight through October 31. And Dolan Creek Farm, a 115-acre working farm, opens its pumpkin patch every October with tractor rides, farm animals, and a nature trail.
Local tip
Go early on a weekend morning to beat the crowds, bring cash for the farm stands, and dress for some mud. Pumpkin patches are far more fun when you are not worried about good shoes. Check each farm's current hours before you head out, since fall schedules can shift with the weather.
Trick-or-treating, Estacada style
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means two of the sweetest events of the month. In Estacada, the Creepy Crawl brings safe, downtown trick-or-treating to kids on Saturday, October 31 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Local businesses hand out candy, and it is a relaxed, family-friendly way to celebrate without worrying about traffic or dark streets. Parents love it, and so do the kids.
And in Sandy, the Chamber of Commerce's Trick-or-Treat Trail runs through downtown Sandy each year on the Saturday before Halloween. This year that is October 24, typically 2:00 to 4:00 PM. It draws well over a thousand trick-or-treaters most years, and the Sandy Kiwanis hand out treats at their booth near the public library parking lot as well. It is a wonderful example of how this community shows up for its kids.
Last call for the farmers markets
October is the last month to enjoy our farmers markets before they close for the season, and it is a great one for stocking up. The Sandy City Farmers Market runs Saturdays through October 17 at the Amphitheater Park, and the Mount Hood Farmers Market runs Fridays through October 16 at 38600 Proctor Boulevard. Pick up winter squash, apples, local honey, and cider while you can, and grab a few gifts while you are there. You will be glad you did come November.
Fall color and mountain air
Mid-to-late October is prime leaf-peeping season in the foothills. One of my favorite spots is the Riverbend Loop at Milo McIver State Park, just a few miles from Estacada, where golden maples line the Clackamas River. I wrote all about the park's trails, disc golf, and river access in this post.
For a quick and easy payoff, head up to Jonsrud Viewpoint above Sandy for the classic Mount Hood view over the Sandy River Valley, draped in fall color this month. And if you have an afternoon, drive the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway: it runs right through Sandy and up Highway 26, and the stretch near the West Barlow Tollgate is especially colorful in October. The mountain bike trails at Sandy Ridge also stay rideable well into fall, when the cooler air and dry trails make for some of the best riding of the year.
Salmon season on the rivers
Fall is when the salmon come home, and there are two wonderful, very different ways to see it. At Wildwood Recreation Site just past Sandy, the Cascade Streamwatch Trail is a short, paved, fully accessible loop that ends at an underwater viewing window where you can watch salmon and trout swim right past you. It is genuinely magical for kids, and spawning season runs roughly from late September through December.
For a proper hike, the Old Salmon River Trail is a gentle, roughly 3.8-mile round trip through maples that blaze orange and yellow, with spawning fish visible in the clear water below. And for anglers, October is a good month on the Clackamas River for fall Chinook and coho, with steelhead picking up as the season moves on. Metzler Park has easy river access and is one of the spots I send people to; I shared more about it here. Always check current ODFW regulations before you fish.
Chamberfest: a night out in Estacada
For a grown-up night out, the Estacada Area Chamber's Chamberfest happens Saturday, October 10 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Estacada Community Center. This year's theme is western, and it is the chamber's big annual fundraiser, with dinner, auction, and live music. It is a lovely way to support local businesses while having fun with neighbors, and tickets always go quickly.
Why I love October here
After more than 20 years helping people buy and sell homes in Estacada, Sandy, and the surrounding areas, I have learned that a place becomes home through its seasons and its traditions. October is when this community gathers, celebrates the harvest, and makes the most of the golden weeks before the rain settles in. I hope this guide helps you make the most of it.
And if you are thinking about calling this area home, fall is a beautiful time to look. I would love to show you around. Let me help with that.
